That is a great victory all by itself, but when it was achieved by beating Vishy Anand, the greatest rapid chess player in the world, then it takes on a special quality. Sixteen top GMs took part in this rapid chess festival on the French island of Corsica, but little information leaked out to the chess world. We have games and pictures.

Okay, the event was won by Vladimir P. Malaniuk, 49, from Ukraine. But more interesting, for us at least, was the sight of world-class GMs facing children, in part a third their Elo rating and a third their weight, in the first round of the Corsica Circuit Open Festival that ended today. A two-game match between Boris Spassky and Anatoly Karpov ended in a 1½:½ victory for the veteran Spassky. The "Match des Légendes" took place on May 26th 2006 in Porto-Vecchio, Corsica. The rate of play was 15 mins + 3 secs increment per move. The prize fund was 22,000 Euros, 15,000 for the winner. More.
